The oxidation of iron oxide forms rust (oxides). Rusting is the common term for corrosion of iron and its alloys, such as steels. Iron combines very readily with oxygen, when the oxygen combines with the metal in an atomic level, it forms a new compound called oxide, oxide weakens the bonds of metals by itself. If the base metal is iron or steel, the resulting rust is called iron oxide; water, iron and oxygen are the main materials for iron to become iron oxide, when water comes in contact with metal, water molecules easily penetrates the pits and cracks of the metal, the hydrogen atoms present in water mixed with other elements forms carbonic acids, eventually this will cause the metal to be more exposed.

How can we prevent this from happening?

There are lots of alternative ways on how to prevent rust, one is keeping your metal always dry so that water wont accelerate the process of rusting, you can purchase things that are not designed to rust (stainless steels are great examples), or add rust protectant you can purchase this product from most of hardwares, these products adds extra coat of material over iron so that the oxygen cannot get in, (no oxygen no forming of iron oxide)

Another problem about rust is when they reach concrete or cements, either its walls or floors, do you know the sources of rust in your concretes.

Water that has contact with metals and runs through concrete, grout, tiles, bricks etc, search for the rundown markings these water may have contact reinforcement bars on concrete slabs, fixtures or metal railings, etc. these water brings out minerals from the natural stones.

How to prevent and treat this situation?

Acid commonly known as muriatic acids are used in cleaning tiles and masonry, acids can reach oxidizes and metal rust, You can neutralize the acid by cleaning it with water.

and baking soda, wait for it to dry, you can check if it still has acid contents with litmus paper, last thing to remember after doing these is to seal it, the one with penetrating type sealers can do the trick, this will prevent future moisture reaction to the remaining acids in the surface.

Another safer alternative options in removing rust is by making your own rust removers, this benefits you because it’s inexpensive, fast acting and no harsh chemicals or fumes, here are some rust removers that you can make at your home,

You can do the same thing with borax and lemon juice, you can repeat the process if you can still see rust spots

another thing to remember that objects may appear black in color after being applied with vinegar and lemon juice, but I should return to its original color after being rinsed with water.
