The number of disabled people who are living in California is high. These disabled persons are prevented by their condition to do the things they normally do, specifically working. Their physical state prevents them from earning money, which they will use to sustain their needs. To address this problem, the Social Disability Insurance (SDI) was created.

How does this Insurance Program Works?

SDI is an insurance program in California that is implemented by the Employment Development Department. Like other insurance programs, SDI works by having the people covered by it pay the premium, which is a monthly fee to acquire benefits if a specific event takes place.

Most of the employees in California are covered by this insurance. People who are covered pay the premium of the SDI through their payroll tax. Every time these employees get their paycheck, a certain amount to it is transferred to the SDI program.

People who are eligible to acquire a SDI benefits are the people who contributed into it and are unable to work because of the reasons:

• They need to acquire for a Paid Family Leave (PFL). Through PFL, a portion of their income that was lost when they missed work to have a bonding with a new child or to take care of a sick relative.

• They are pregnant. Although being pregnant is not an injury or illness, it is a valid medical reason for them to miss work.

Meanwhile, before becoming eligible to acquire for SDI benefit, the following requirements should be met:

• For the people who are unemployed, they have to be seeking for employment actively.
