Firstly, people perceive the lawn care business to be huge (over $60 billion in the United States) and figure that there are so many lawns out there that they will have no trouble getting at least some accounts. This is still true to some extent with lawn care in that if you put in the work required you would definitely get customers.

Other people are attracted to lawn care due to the low barriers to entry. Pretty much anyone can start a small lawn care operation due to the minimal investment required compared to other businesses.

Many people are forced into the business through lack of other options. In tough economic times when work is scarce, anyone with a the basic equipment and some determination can still go out and make a basic living with a lawn mower. You don’t need an education, qualifications or connections to get started in lawn care as you can pretty much learn as you go.

The lawn maintenance business basically offers small businessmen the freedom to schedule work whenever they want and to work as long and as hard as they desire and thus make as much money as they want out of it. Some business owners love the fact that the business has a quiet season over the winter in many regions so you can pretty much work hard for nine months of the year and then take a three-month vacation if you want.

A life of physical, outdoor work appeals to some and they enjoy getting fit and staying healthy by being active in their work.

To others, the variety of work involved in lawn maintenance makes for exciting days that aren’t as dull as what they would get being in an office. Being out in the truck, working on lawns and gardens and meeting a variety of people throughout the day appeals to some.

There are many reasons why people enter the lawn care industry but I think the main reason is the challenge that people see in building their own business form the ground up. Seeing ‘your baby’ grow into something that you can really be proud of can give you an enormous amount of satisfaction in your work.
