What exactly makes for a successful company?
Is merely staying in business all you’re looking for? Do you specifically want to make your customers as happy as possible? Are you trying to be the most dominate company in your industry? Do you want your brand name to be something that people immediately think about when they think of your industry?
Maybe instead you want to be sure that you control a large portion of your market, or maybe you just want enough of the market to keep your business alive?

Consider if success for you is very customer oriented. You want to be the leading voice for your customers to turn to whenever they have any questions about your industry. How exactly can you gauge this? You can look at your share of the market for a start, but what if people are only shopping with you until they find someplace better?
