Filing Car Insurance

If you are one of the unlucky individuals who have been involved in a car accident, you know that it is a daunting (and sometimes tedious) task to file and claim for car insurance. That need not be the case. There are ways you can make the experience of claiming for auto insurance quicker and easier, and here are some of them:

1. Make sure that you read and understand your car insurance policy. Your policy will contain what damages will be covered, what the deductibles are, and what requirements you need to provide. Understanding your auto insurance policy will help you make the right decisions when filing the claim.

2. Your insurance agent is your ally. Once you're ready to make the claim, call your agent as he should be involved in the process. He basically represents the auto insurance company so he may assist you in speeding up the claims process. Your agent can also help you with any other questions you may have.

3. The accident needs to be properly documented. Police reports, photos of the scene, photos of the damage and other paperwork such as receipts and registration needs to be submitted in order for your claim to be processed. It would be favorable to you if you could provide complete and accurate documentation as this makes the car insurance company's investigation easier.

4. Write down your claim number as you would need this when following up on your claim. Some auto insurance companies now have an online tracking system so you may check the status there. You should also write this on your statements (if there are discussions between you and other parties) and sometimes, the police requires this information.

5. Once you have been provided with the insurance amount, make sure to get a second opinion. It doesn't hurt if you ask another auto insurance company for a quote as long as it's a well-established group. If you know that you should get a higher claim, you can ask your insurance company to re-evaluate your case.

6. Depending on how serious the damages and the accident were, your claim may take a long time to process. However, you can research and check what the state requirements are regarding turnaround time. Some states require insurance companies to respond quickly so if you are unsure and have been waiting quite a while for your claim, contact your state insurance department.

7. Car insurance claims should only be filed if it is really needed. Filing too many claims in a year will give you a negative standing with your auto insurance company. It tells them that you are a high-risk driver and would not be an ideal driver to insure. Some companies even go to the extent of canceling the car insurance policy if they find that a driver has had too many claims.

With these tips, you can assure yourself of an accurate insurance claim and your auto insurance company can provide you with the best coverage possible.
