The purpose of doing Kegel exercises is to promote better sexual health by working the pubococcygeus (PC) muscle. A healthy and robust PC muscle provides many benefits to men. It helps maintain and control ejaculations and erections. It also increases the flow of blood to the penis, prevents incontinence and keeps the prostate in good shape. Kegels can also be used by women to bring their vagina back into shape after the stretching caused by delivering a baby.

According to the San Francisco Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, the pubococcygeus muscle plays an important role in the sexual health of men and women. In 1983, the Institute published the results of a study on Kegel Exercises which focused on the sexual benefits men and women can get from exercising their PC muscles. Conclusions supported the simple fact that well toned pelvic muscles, including the PC muscle, improve sexual control and play a key part in achieving orgasm.

A strong PC muscle works like a good set of brakes in your car. You can use it to control your arousal the way you use your brakes to control your speed, and you don't even need a learner's permit to start practicing! It's also the "brake" you will use to hold back your ejaculation from happening too quickly, or not at the "right time".

Kegel is a term used to refer to exercises aimed at restoring and increasing the tone of the pubococcygeus muscle by regular clenching and unclenching. Kegel exercises find their roots from ancient traditions. They were first developed by the Taoist movement in China quite some time ago. In those times, exercises were meant to strengthen various muscles in order to promote health, longevity, spiritual development and also better sex. Later on, Doctor Arnold Kegel simply adapted the "program" to the modern world, vastly promoted it and contributed to make the exercises very popular.

Everybody knows that the penis is not a muscle. If it was, you'd probably be at the gym right now! What most people don't know is that the pubococcygeus muscle plays a crucial role in the functioning of the penis. It is actually a group of muscles that run from the pubic bone to the tailbone, between the scrotum and the anus. Now, you may already know this muscle in a different way. The PC muscle is the muscle you use to stop the flow of urine from the bladder. Anybody who has ever tried to keep from urinating knows instinctively what muscles to tense in order to close the urethra and prevent the emptying of your bladder. It is also the muscle that contracts when you ejaculate, moving the semen up through the penis and out of the body.

Men can usually identify the PC muscle by tensing the muscles in their pelvic floor until they find the one that makes their penis jump. This is best done with an erect penis, because the movement of the penis is easier to observe. The PC muscle works and responds like any other muscle, and it can be strengthened like any other one. This where kegel exercises come into play.
