It is concerning to see that many people don't realize the threat of identity theft until it happens to them. It can happen to anyone, it does not matter who you are, or what your background is. You can become a victim unless you take some precautions; this also goes for your parents, kids, friends and relatives. What makes it worse is that it can happen at any time and at any place.

Growing Fast

In this day and age, it comes as no surprise that identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the world not just the US. With all the advancements in technologies it has given criminals more power to unlawfully access an individuals private information and put it to their own use, the scary part is that you probably would not even realize that someone is using your identity for days, weeks or months.

Even though, many identity thefts lead to financial losses, this is not the only consequence. For some it can cause emotional suffering as well as realizing your loan or employment application has been rejected because of your identity being used by someone else. Being a realist it is vital you understand it is impossible to protect yourself from becoming a target of identity theft but nonetheless you should be aware that there are steps which can be followed to minimize your risk.

Two important steps that you can easily adapt are:

1 - Never reveal your personal information or social security number to anyone until you get them verified.

2 - If you are one of the many people who put your social security number in your wallet or purse you need to get out of this habit. This will protect your identity from pocket thieves.

Due to the rise of identity theft it has become a topic of discussion among many people who have been a victim or who are concerned about it. With the internet identity theft has become worse as many people do not foresee any threats to buying online. Even if a website is genuine does not mean it is secured against threats which websites are prone to these days. In which case, hackers can access the websites database to retrieve personal information about individuals.

You should therefore always check out websites integrity, this can be done by checking security certificates found on the site. Individual and small businesses are not the only ones making mistakes in terms of security. Large corporations as well as government organizations are also targeted by identity thieves.
