It is important to have a fire safety and emergency process in place for your business. If a fire were to break out, you and your employees must know exactly what to do and where to go.
If anyone is injured in a fire on your property or work premises, as the owner of the business you are in line to be sued. Unless you have public liability insurance, you could be held financially responsible for injury to staff, clients and anyone who suffered injury in the fire.
These costs could bankrupt you, so it’s best to have a good fire management policy in place and to take out a good public liability insurance policy. It’s essential to minimise the chances of a fire firstly, and to also have an emergency plan in place in case of an accident.
If a fire occurs processes must be in place to ensure it is controlled quickly, effectively and safely and that everyone in your premises is able to escape to a place of total safety easily and quickly. To help you design and implement the best processes for your business and premises, a risk assessment must be carried out to help you identity danger areas, and to ensure that your fire safety procedures, fire prevention measures, and fire precautions are all in the best positions and working properly.
You also need to identify where people are working, either at permanent locations or at occasional locations around the premises, and to consider who else may be at risk, such as customers, visiting contractors, and so on.
You need to have an emergency plan for dealing with any fire situation, the purpose of which is to ensure that the people on your premises know what to do if there is a fire and that the premises can be quickly and safely evacuated.
According to law, if you or your organisation employs five or more people or your premises are licensed or an alterations notice requiring it is in force then details of your emergency plan must be recorded. Even if it is not required, it is a good idea to keep a record.
