Going for a job interview can be stressful and nerve racking but there are proven interview techniques and tips that can be utilized to help.
Number 1 is always to arrive for your interview on time. Nothing screams "unreliable" to a prospective employer like someone who isn’t punctual before they are hired! Plan the day’s itinerary well ahead leaving time to deal with any gremlins that may rear their heads.
Dress professionally. It doesn’t matter if you are interviewing while the office is observing "casual Friday." You don’t work there yet and it is important to set the proper tone for your meeting. Wear a suit, it will send the right message.
Know the job. Make sure you are familiar with the position for which you are applying. Have some questions of your own prepared for the interviewer as they generally provide the opportunity to ask them at the end of the session.
Know the company. Research your potential employer before you interview. This will impress them and signal you are serious about your interest in a career with their firm.
Body language is important. Smile, make eye contact, and extend your hand for a firm (but not pain inducing) handshake. Don’t talk too much. Many people tend to talk (or over talk) when they get nervous. Answer the questions asked entirely but succinctly. Don’t volunteer unnecessary information and always allow the interviewer to finish speaking before you begin.
Be prepared to share a weakness. Humility is a positive quality; companies are hesitant to hire a know-it-all as they can be hard to coach and bad for office morale. No one is perfect but let them know how you aim to improve.
Always maintain a positive attitude. Bad mouthing a former (or current) employer is a major turnoff for most interviewers. Keeping these eight tips in mind, you will no doubt have a successful interview.
