Truck, SUV and car owners are increasingly buying train horn kits to install on their prized vehicle. But where to install those components? We examine common locations for those train horn components.

Air Horn

There are numerous locations for the air horn depending on the dimensions of the train horn and your truck.

1 The roof for a visible install 2 Inside the front/rear bumper 3 Inside the engine compartment 4 Inside the rear quarter panels 5 Along the frame rails 6 Inside an empty under vehicle wheel well (which can hold all your horn components if mounted on a board). 7. Anywhere underneath. Facing your horns to the rear will pick up less rain spray from wheels and will still sound loud. Pointing horns downward up to 45 degreees will yield a louder tone due to the relecting road surface.

Air Valve

The air valve, if separate, should be mounted within 2 feet (50cm) of the horn. (Some solenoid valves come pre-installed at the base of the horn.) The valve can be attached to the frame, body, or any other solid surface using zip ties. If possible, use no more than two or three feet of tubing for a quick snappy response.

Air Tank

An air tank can go anywhere it will fit. It can be mounted outside the vehicle on a pick-up bed or inside a utility box. Underneath the truck is also a common location. For frame rail side-mounted tanks: The tank's weight varies depending on size of tank but in any case, it's heavy! Make sure that you use strong mounting bolts, especially if you are mounting the air tank on the side of a frame rail.

Air Compressor

The air horn compressor is a pump with a working motor. It must be kept free of restriction so it does not overheat. Install it where it is away from high heat or wetness such as a trunk. Pickup truckers typically install these items under or behind the seat or on the bed in a utility box.

Be sure to map out in your mind the locations for your components even before you order. Most sellers give dimensions so let those be your guide to find what will fit where. Give yourself at least a couple hours if you are doing it yourself.
