Age-related memory loss is a common problem that is the effect of the normal process of neuron or nerve cell degeneration as we get older, as well as lifestyle-related and environmental factors. It is usually the elderly who show obvious instances of memory loss, but even younger adults in their late twenties and thirties may experience the onset of gradual decline in memory function.

Exercise your brainpower. Keep setting up complicated mental challenges for yourself and monitor your response. One of the best ways of keeping your cerebrum hooked is by engaging into activities that require mathematical manipulative skills. This includes solving scrabble, crossword, puzzles, and other mental games. Keeping a track of current affairs and politics also works wonders.

Mental exercise (word puzzles, reading, writing) and physical exercise are important aspects of nourishing and tonifying the brain and memory. Memorize poetry and recite it for friends. Volunteer for Community Theater and memorize your part. The more you use your memory, the stronger it will be.

The supplements for memory loss that are based on ginkgo biloba improve the blood flow to the brain. By doing this, they help the nervous system to function properly. In addition, these supplements prevent the cholesterol to turn into plaque that forms on the arteries. The plaque worsens the blood flow, fact that leads to stroke and eventually to memory loss.

Severe alcoholism is between the most serious causes of memory loss. This fact is explained by the destruction of the nerves. Alcohol is known for its bad effects over the nervous system. It affects all the mental processes, not only the memory. Drinking moderate amounts of alcohol may prevent memory loss.

Nobody really knows how exercise helps prevent loss of mental function, but every factor that helps protect you from getting a heart attack or stroke also protects you from dementia. Anything that protects blood vessels also protects your brain. Heart attacks and dementia are associated with eating too much fat, saturated fat, fried foods, refined carbohydrates, too many calories, and not eating enough vegetables, nuts, beans and other seeds; being overweight, not exercising, taking more than two alcoholic drinks a day, and smoking.

Scientists have proven the fact that right diet increase the immunity of the brain towards inflammation and oxidation. Also it helps brain cells to communicate between them easily. One important area of research in this subject is the role of antioxidants, potent chemicals in plant that protect against free radicals which are responsible for damaging brain cells.

It is well recognized that various substances can affect your memory, and studies have shown that others can help rejuvenate memory. Many are found in the foods you would be eating if you eat a good diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables. Anti oxidants, vitamins and minerals and more are found in abundance in fresh fruit and vegetables, but not in burgers or pizzas. Memory improvement programs should always include a focus on good diet.
