Affiliate marketing involves selling a product or offering a service on behalf of a company. With affiliate marketing you are not usually at considered to be employee of the company but rather an independent marketer. Affiliate marketers receive commissions based on a specific required action, that ‘action’ is usually closing a sale.

But how should one go about becoming an online affiliate marketer? Is it worth it?

I’ll answer the second question first. And the answer is an emphatic YES, It is definitely worth it. Many of the huge companies that you see featured online actually see a large percentage of their sales coming from affiliate referrals. It’s literally a multi-billion dollar market.
Now on the internet you’ll usually find basically two types of companies offering affiliate programs; those that sell tangible products and those that sell electronic products. And there are also those companies that facilitate the easy interaction between company and affiliate, serving as a sort of middle-man. A couple popular ones are ‘ClickBank’ for electronic products and ‘Commission Junction’ for tangible products. Once you’ve signed up with one of those intermediate entities (signing up is usually free) you will be able to browse through thousands of companies seeking affiliates to sell their products.

But how do you determine the best company to sign up with and start selling their products? Well, the first thing you will need to do is to find out if people want to buy what the company is selling. Use keyword research tools to determine how many people are actually searching for the particular product online. Also, take into account how many other affiliates seem to already be involved in the market, since too much competition can smother you efforts. Take into account also the amount of money you will get for each sale and multiply that by the amount of sales you expect to get monthly to determine if it’s worth it financially.

Once you’ve decided which company(ies) you wish to sign up with you can start promoting their product. Try to get as many ads out there as possible using whatever advertising method you are comfortable with. The truth is that in advertising most of the time quantity will outdo quality. Just get as many ads out there as possible with links pointing back to your affiliate webpage and you’ll be stunned at how much affiliate marketing will reward your efforts.
