Driving through cold and rainy streets is not something new to vehicle owners in the city of San Francisco. When it is very windy, there is a big possibility that stones and even small pebbles will hit the windows of vehicles. The stones are usually flung into the air by other passing vehicles. The windy weather only increases the frequency of these accidents happening. When a stone hits the glass, it may create a crack or a chip. You must immediately attend to this matter once you notice it. Otherwise, the small crack or chip will spread into bigger and longer cracks. You have to arrest the cracking at its inception to avoid having to replace the whole window or windshield. Do not wait for the damage to worsen because this will only rein in higher replacement costs.

There are also other precautions to take when auto glass repair is involved. When the glass in the window or windshield of a car has been subjected to repair or replacement procedures, the vehicle owner cannot immediately take the car for a drive under bad weather conditions. Low temperatures and high humidity levels may be bad for your newly-repaired vehicle. There are certain types of glass glue which require a longer time for curing. This is because the urethane in the glue needs a longer period to strengthen and achieve its maximum effects when it is exposed to cold winds and rain.

The owner of the car must make the necessary inquiries with the auto shop which did the repair before driving away with the vehicle. The repair men will determine whether the temperature in the roads is safe for the glass that has just been repaired or installed. A two-part glue is required to be used in glass breaks if the car will be driven under temperatures of 40 degrees Fahrenheit and below. If the car has an air bag mechanism installed, more time is needed for the curing of the glue.

For greater certainty, the vehicle owner may also obtain information from the car manufacturer regarding the curing period needed for cars which have just undergone glass repair. Manufacturers usually know the length of time that will cause the windshield to break after the deployment of the air bags.

If there is an urgent necessity to use the vehicle right after the repair of the window glass and there is no more time to make the needed research, the car owner must at least inform the installer. This is to get last minute tips from the installer on how to lessen the possibility of further damage to the auto glass.

For vehicles with newly-repaired glass windows, the two-part glue that is stronger than the ordinary one is safer to use in the San Francisco weather. However, the two-part glue costs significantly higher than the regular glue. If the owner is covered by car insurance, he may inquire with the insurance company if the costs of using the glue can be reimbursed.

These tips are important to avoid any further damage to auto glass which has just been repaired. Maintaining a vehicle already entails a lot of costs so it will be wise to take the necessary safeguards before driving out into bad weather conditions.
