Your home is a place where things happen. People are constantly coming and going, leaving behind little incidental messes which they are often too busy or too oblivious to notice. These little messes, while not a big deal on their own, do add up over time, and can make the work of keeping a livable environment a heavy burden. However there a few tricks that you can use to help prevent some of these messes, as well as help to make the cleanup a lot easier.

The first thing you should make sure of is that there you have plenty of trash receptacles scattered throughout the house. You should have at least one bin per room. If you are worried about these trash cans ruining the elegant style you are trying to evoke, then make the bin part of the space, by choosing a model that has some funky colors, or an interesting design. Ash trays are also a much smaller and more subtle way of having a trash bin in a room, although they do carry the sometimes negative connotation of smoking, which you may not want to display in the home.

Another way to help prevent messes is to cut down on the clutter. The more stuff there is in a space, the more chance that it will be moved, broken, or simply knocked over. Less is more, and the more Zen like your home is, the more serenity you will have trying to maintain it.

Organization itself is an important factor in maintaining the beauty of your home. If you have a big junk bin in a corner, everyone will toss random accessories into there, rather than leaving them scattered throughout the space. They’ll do it just because its easy. On the other hand if you have a complex array of receptacles for storage, people will be less likely to use it, but it will also be easier for you to organize for them. The right organizational style will feature a compromise between the two, which fits in well with the personality style of you and everyone else in the house.

Small items such as drink coasters, napkins, and floor mats are all very simple items which you can purchase to make it easier for people to help you maintain a room. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

The best way to prevent messes is to anticipate them. Look around a room, and notice where clutter, dirt, and other problems tend to arise. Then install whatever feature it takes to cut down on those messes, and make it easier for the people causing them to avoid it altogether. A little strategy and fore planning can go a long way toward helping to make your overall job a whole lot easier.
