Setting yourself manageable job search targets on a daily or weekly basis, and even scoring yourself to make sure that you stay on track, helps to make you feel in control of an area of life which might otherwise begin to feel totally unmanageable. Every time you cross something off your list you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have moved one step closer to your end goal and gained valuable knowledge and experience in the process. Working across a variety of job search activities, meanwhile, helps to maintain interest and enthusiasm and stops your job search from getting stale. You can even reward yourself with a little treat at the end of each week if you hit your targets.
Goal-setting is not something new. Think about all the 12 step programs that individuals across the globe embark on every day of the week. These are nothing more than series of ‘mini-goals’ which lead to an ultimate aim, and they work because they bring structure and they break the seemingly impossible down into manageable chunks.
You can find out much more about how to determine your own objectives and set your own job search goals in my book entitled ‘The Job Search Ninja Guide’. Not only does it look at the theory behind goal-setting, but it also provides you with some useful worksheets to help you break down the job search process. Just drop me a note if you would like some further information.
