Do you know why they call a dog mans best friend? Because if a man locked his dog and his wife outside the house all night long, the dog would still be happy to see him the next day. Isn’t that true? It seems that almost no matter how we may fail, our four legged friends are always happy to see us. So here are some of the ways that a dog makes a better friend than another human.

They do not care how much money you make

All a dog cares about in a material way is that they have some food every day. It doesn’t even have to taste good. They can eat the same thing every day for their whole life and they will not complain about it. Your dog does not care what kind of car you drive. They are just as happy in the bed of a rusted out 1979 Datsun pickup as they would be in a brand new Mercedes. A dog has no idea if you live in a nice house or an old wood shed that’s about to fall over. What about your job? To Fido it does not matter if you are a stockbroker on Wall Street or if you clean outhouses all day. (He will be able to tell, but it still does not matter.) Your dog has no concept of money so you know that he will never stab you in the back over some Benjamins.

They do not get embarrassed by you

Your dog will never say, "Is that really what you are going to wear?" He doesn’t know that overalls with one shoulder buckle undone are not considered formal attire even when you include the tuxedo t-shirt. When you walk out of the house wearing shorts and work boots, displaying your neon white legs that have not seen the sun since last Summer, you don’t have to worry about your dog hiding his head in shame when the next door neighbor stops by to borrow your lawnmower. If your dog is hanging out with his other dog friends, and it is time to leave he won’t say, "Dad, you are so lame" when you try to be cool with the other dogs. And no matter what you do, when you first meet someone, your dog will not be embarrassed because, after all, when they meet someone new the first thing they do is sniff each others dirty parts.

They can’t talk

It does not matter what you tell your dog or what he sees happen, he cannot tell a single soul. Not that he would, but he is incapable of selling you out even by accident. You can confess every dirty little secret you have to your buddy and be confident that it goes to the grave with him. Your dog will also listen to you about your problems. It is like having the best psychiatrist living in your back yard for free. He can’t tell if you are crazy, sane, smart or stupid, but whatever he thinks he won’t tell anyone else.

While some of these points may be exaggerated, they have their roots in the truth. Dogs make great friends because they love us unconditionally.
