When wedding dress shopping goes wrong, bridezilla comes out

By now, everyone has heard the term "Bridezilla". It’s used to describe potential brides whose bad behavior reminds people of Godzilla stomping through towns in the old monster movies, stepping on and over everything he encounters. There’s even a television show now that features the worst of the worst upcoming brides.

When it comes to wedding gowns, bridezillas are no less calm and collected, and their attitudes are deplorable. There’s no reason to behave in such a bad way, but many of them do. There is one of two outcomes of these types of encounters; the bride gets her way or the designer/seamstress/retailer throws her out and makes her start from scratch.

Whereas most people tend to see themselves as blameless when bad things happen, many times it really is their fault. Let’s take a look at some things, as they pertain to wedding dresses, brides ultimately have to be responsible for:

The dress doesn’t fit. Almost every potential bride says that she wants to lose weight before the wedding. Some do, some don’t. When brides gain weight throughout their fittings, they’re risking the possibility of growing out of the dress they’ve purchased because wedding dresses are usually made to be form fitting, which means there’s usually little extra fabric to increase them with. Also, if a bride drops too much weight between fittings, alterations that need to be made will take more time, thus could increase the price.

Style doesn’t look as good as it did when you purchased it. Many women buy clothes, and then decide they don’t like them later on and take them back to the store. So it’s no surprise that the same thing happens with wedding dresses. The difference is that it’s hard to change up on wedding dresses at the drop of a hat for most brides to be. It’s stressful enough for brides the closer it gets to their wedding day to begin with; once you’ve made a decision regarding your dress design, unless the designer totally changes up on your wishes, go with your original thought, when you were under less pressure, and roll with it.

You want to change up on some of the details of the dress after the face. You’ve told your designer you want a lot of beading done on certain areas of the dress, then later, when you see it, you don’t like it and want it removed, but don’t want to pay extra for it. Brides need to recognize that intricate needlework is time consuming, and if you’re not prepared to pay for it, don’t ask for it. Designers and those who do alterations have other clients besides you, and if they take the time to put in the effort to give you what you want, it’s your fault for changing up on the back end, so be prepared to either pay or lose that designer.

The designer didn’t fulfill your wishes. Most of the time, if the designer didn’t give you what you wanted, it’s your fault. Most women aren’t designers, but have an image of what they want their wedding dresses to look like. It’s hard to convey an image that only your mind can reproduce, and designers aren’t mind readers. If you have a feeling that your designer might not get your dream correct, you need to be ready to invest a lot of time into visiting the designer to see your dress at different stages of the process.

Weddings are supposed to be enjoyable times, and the planning stages can be as stressful as anything else in a new couple’s life. So try to plan ahead when it comes to your wedding gown, have a strong belief in your initial choices, and don’t let this part of your wedding day drive you over the edge.
