There are six elements that must be observed when writing poems, and in a few lines, I am going to lay what they are out for you. Writing a good poem really isn’t the hard, especially if you know what you what to say.

The first element of writing a poem or any other form of creative writing is deciding on the topic and having a fairly good knowledge of the topic. For must beginners the hardest part of writing is taking the ideal from your head to the paper.

The second element of writing is deciding what style you intend to use. If you have never written a poem before you should probably go with free verse or rhyming. If you have written before use whatever style, you feel more comfortable with and the style the best fits your topic.

The third element is diction, the choice of words you use. Will your poem be narrative or descriptive, what kind of language will you choose to use. Will you use metaphorical or will speak straight forward.

When you first start writing, you should keep a pad or a recorder near you so that when you get ideas you will be able to get it down as soon a possible. You should not worry about the style or grammar, the most important thing is getting the idea out. You can always go back and clean it up later.

Keep a dictionary close by, and try as much as you can to use interesting words, paint a picture, make it vivid, and show the reader what you see. Once your done read it aloud, see how it sounds then if you need to make a few changes and mostly you will, edit it.

Set it aside for a few days and then come back to it with fresh eyes, you will probably need to make a few changes; this is your final step. My name is Luke Wilson and I'm an avid consumer writer.
