When you are getting ready to be a new parent, you'll find that you may very well be feeling apprehensive, and it makes a lot of sense. You are looking forward to welcoming a new person into your life, someone that you are going to be completely responsible for, and it can be a little bit daunting. Take some time and review some of the tips below. This can make it a little bit easier on you, and the more information you can process, the better off you are going to be.
Get some help. The first days after your baby comes home with you are going to be very busy and tiring. There is a lot to do and a lot of new things to get used to, and it is true when they say it is not very much like what you expected. Find someone to come in and give you a hand, whether they stay during the day or for a full week of days and nights. This will take the strain off you, particularly if it is someone who comforts you too!
Consider swaddling When you see a swaddled baby, a baby that has been completely and tightly wrapped in cloth, you may be wondering how that could be comfortable. The truth of the matter is that babies who are swaddled are often much more comfortable and a lot more peaceful than babies who are left to flail. When you wrap up a baby, just take the time to make sure that his or her limbs are held comfortably and that they are not uncomfortable.
Dealing with Diapers Diapers are a fact of life when you deal with babies. Remember that you should change your baby's diaper promptly and if diaper rash occurs, you should deal with it promptly as well. If your baby gets diaper rash, clean the area with a very mild soap and water mix. After your rinse it off, put on some diaper rash cream. Look for a cream that has zinc oxide because they will keep out the moisture while allowing the skin time to heal. Also give your baby some time to roam around without their diaper on.
Taking care of the umbilical cord When you are dealing with the umbilical cord, remember that it should be kept as clean as possible. Some doctors will tell you that the area should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol until it falls off, while other people tell you that it should be left alone. Remember that your infant's navel should not be dunked under the water until the area is healed up. Be ready for the stump of the cord turning to brown or black. These colors are normal, and you don't need to call your doctor unless it becomes angrily red or if you notice a bad smell or a discharge.
There are lots of things that you should keep in mind when you are thinking about taking care of your baby. The list above will get you started!
