Keyboard shortcuts and hotkeys for gmail

I personally love to work with shortcut keys whether I am working on my design job (Photoshop, flash etc) or just doing simple operating system work, I like to do it with shortcut keys. No doubt shortcut keys increases efficiency of the user and increases productivity by saving lots of time that you have to spend doing same things manually.

Gmail have that amazing feature of keyboard shortcuts, to make it work, first you have to enable it. Click on the Settings link at the top right of the webpage, General tab will open. Look for Keyboard Shortcuts, and then click on the Keyboard Shortcuts on radio button. Now keyboard shortcuts are enabled and you can use them instantly. I am listing below all (beginner, intermediate and advance) Gmail keyboard shortcuts. I am already using it and hope that they will help you too.

Hotkeys and shortcuts

Let’s start with some basic ones; these are pretty easy to remember too.

A (a)

If you want to reply all recipients of message, simple press SHIFT + a. This will open a new window with all recipients in it and you are ready to mail. Make sure you are allowed to show pop ups from Gmail, else a warning will appear (work only when you are in conversation mode).

C (c)

SHIFT + c will open a new window so that you can compose a new message.

E (e)

Press e while any mail is open and that mail will be archived. You can also select multiple mails and Press e to archive them at once. Archive mails can be viewed in all mail Section.

This one is used to refresh your page and return to you inbox or list of conversations in case of labels.

Q (q)

This one is used for moving your cursor to chat search box.

F (f)

SHIFT + f pop ups a new window and you can forward that mail (work only when you are in conversation mode).

N (n)

Press N (n) to move your cursor to the next message. You have to press ENTER to expand or collapse that particular message (work only when you are in conversation mode).

P (p)

Press P (p) to move your cursor to the previous message. You have to press ENTER to expand or collapse that particular message (work only when you are in conversation mode).

R (r)

Press SHIFT + r to reply to message sender (work only when you are in conversation mode).

Y (y)

This will remove current message or conversation from your mailbox. Y (y) has different applications for different views. If you are in INBOX it means archive, for STARRED means remove star from it, for TRASH means Move to INBOX, if you are in any label them pressing Y (y) will remove that particular label. Y (y) has no effect when you are in SPAM, SENT or ALL MAIL.

I (i)

Press I (i) to move your cursor to the next oldest conversation. You have to press ENTER to expand or collapse that particular message.

K (k)

Press K (k) to move your cursor to a more recent conversation. You have to press ENTER to expand or collapse that particular message.
