Today, we have found that more and more illnesses have become big problems for people simply because they failed to act when the problems were minor. Blame it on the need, or desire to spend more time working toward a larger income, or perhaps the high cost of medical attention. Whatever the reason, many people tend to ignore small health problems, choosing to overlook the fact that these small problems can easily become more serious health problems in the future.
One of these health problems that, in its early stages, gets little attention is an ulcer, specifically, the peptic ulcer. Peptic ulcers are often associated with gastric, or duodenal ulceration. These ulcers, when ignored, are known to lead to further health complications. Some examples would be internal hemorrhaging due to the aggravation of major blood vessels, damaging of the person’s stomach wall or intestine, and the protraction of the gastrointestinal tract.
The direct cause of peptic ulcers has been traced, by experts, to the destruction of a person’s gastric, or intestinal mucosal lining. This destruction is usually caused by hydrochloric acid which is present in the digestive juices of a person’s stomach. When infected with the bacterium know as “helicobacter pylori,” a peptic ulcer may develop into a more complicated gastrointestinal illness.
PEPTIC ULCER FACTS
Referred to as a benign gastric ulcer from the antrum of a gastrectomy specimen, the peptic ulcer, or PUD, is classified as a gastrointestinal tract illness caused by excessive stomach acidity. As previously mentioned, this ulcer is usually caused by helicobacter pylori. This is a spiral-shaped bacterium that thrives in the acidic environment of a person’s stomach. Peptic ulcers are said to be a result of the over taking of drugs like aspirin, and other NSAIDs.
Studies have shown that the peptic ulcer is not limited to the stomach, and may develop in other locations. The stomach ulcer is classified as a “gastric ulcer”; an ulcer located in the duodenum is known as a “duodenal ulcer”; when located in the esophagus it is referred to as an “esophageal ulcer”.
Peptic Ulcer Signs and Symptoms
* A mild to extreme burning abdominal pain that would occur during mealtimes
* A bloating, and fullness of the abdomen
* A bitter regurgitation, or waterbrash
* Nausea folled by vomiting
* A noticeable loss of appetite that leads to eventual weight loss
* Vomiting of blood or hematemesis
* Foul-smelling excretion, or feces caused by oxidation of iron from hemoglobin, or melena.
These are not the kind of symptoms that should be ignored!
Studies have proven that a person with a history of heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or the long-term use of certain forms of medications, may make him or her more prone to a peptic ulcer.
Psychological stress can be a possible cause of peptic ulcer. People under significant psychological stress, will many times, neglect proper eating habits, and a healthy lifestyle.
