While considering the flooring for your home, you have many choices. Carpet is one of the most popular choices here. Carpets are available in wide range of colours, patterns, designs, textures, shapes and sizes, choice is really great. Besides enhancing the looks of the room, carpets offer great comfort. Carpet fitting is very important part of carpet laying process. Without proper fit, a carpet does not give that look and comfort which is desired. Without proper fitting, life of the carpet also shortens. You can always call a professional for carpet fitting to make sure everything goes well. But you can also fit a carpet yourself if you follow the guidelines properly.

Carpet Underlay

To properly fit and extend the life of the carpet, a carpet underlay is very important. It is laid between carpet and floorboards or the concrete floor. Though buying a carpet underlay may seem to be expensive but it works as the shock absorber for the carpet. It also makes carpet more comfortable, increases soundproofing and heat insulation. Carpet underlay can be obtained in various thicknesses and densities. But underlay should not be too thick or too soft as it reduces the life of the carpet. A thinner but denser pad will do for a carpet with high foot traffic. Rubber, foam and felt are the materials which are used for the carpet underlay. If you want to lay carpet tiles, then those are fitted like vinyl tiles. There is no need of underlay as they can fit on the floor surface directly.

Carpet Fixings

You can choose from three methods of carpet fitting:

Carpet Tacks: In this method, carpet is rolled at the edge and with the help of the tacks, it is nailed at gaps to the wooden floor.

Double Sided Tape: This method is appropriate for the rubber-backed carpets. First it is stuck to the floor around the perimeter of the room and then the underside of the carpet is fixed.

Gripper Strip: It offers neater finish and is the most popular method of carpet fixing. The metal teeth present in the wooden or metal gripper strip, holds the carpet into the biting material. While laid down on the floor, along the edges of the room, its teeth should face the wall.

Door Bar

To cover the seams of two separate pieces of the carpet on the both sides of the doorway, door bars should be used. You can choose from carpet-to-carpet joins and carpet –to-non-carpet joins.
