For those of us that are huge movie fans, a good home DVD collection is very important. Well if you are one of those people you need to remember the first of September because that is the scheduled release date of the State Of Play DVD. If you have already had a chance to see it then you know how incredible it is. Good enough to pre-order if you are like me and can't wait for it to hit the store shelves.
So what was so incredible about this movie? Well, honestly what wasn't incredible? First of all Russell Crowe is always amazing. In every role he plays he always makes you feel the character, sometimes so much that you forget who he is during the movie and State of Play was no exception.
There was a miniseries on BBC in 2003. It had the same title and is what this movie is based on. A big difference is that the show was for 6 long hours. The movie manages to hold all that energy into a 2 hour space of time. This is one of those movies that you can't walk away from because it is so suspenseful. It is political and mysterious and has power struggles, sexual energy, and newspaper reporting that really gets you.
This is a good movie that has an end that will surprise you. Crowe is a reporter, he is trying to get to the bottom of a bunch of grisly killings. As he uncovers the mystery around these deaths there are connections discovered that lead to some people in politics, particularly a big shot congressman,Collins, played by Ben Affleck. There are interwoven relationships between all these people that is revealed bit by bit. There is plenty of star power behind this movie, and Crowe's character is a tough no-nonsense type.
There is an excellent plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The entire underlying story pulls you into the depths between these people. There are some nice extras in the DVD. My favorite being deleted scenes. It seems like it always adds something to a movie when you get to see all those bits that were cut out. There some good interviews as well. The Director discusses different aspects of how they made the movie and Rachel McAdams has some things to say too. A great addition to your collection without a doubt.
