Many of us have dreamt of one day owning our own business. However the cost of setting one up is usually the main barrier that keeps the dream out of reach. Most businesses start off losing money. How can we afford to do that when there are so many bills need to be met regularly?
Many people have found online businesses to be the answer. Setting up online usually costs significantly less. The cost of a website is a fraction of a real shop. It also costs a lot less to run. Virtually no rent or expensive utilities bills to pay.

However running a business online is not as easy as it may seem. In some aspects, an offline business might be easier to run because a shop will always get some foot flow while a website might never get any traffic. Without traffic, there won’t be any sales and without sales, there is not going to be a viable business.
What one must understand before setting up an online business is that there are billions of websites out there. Search engines like Google and Yahoo are the main tools internet users rely on to find what they want. However, most of us never browse beyond 5 pages of search results so only a tiny percentage of the websites make it.
The different techniques that can help a website rank higher on the search engines are called Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), which is one of the most important factors to a website’s success. The website owner must be prepared to spend a lot of time and effort on SEO and utilise all the free advertising opportunities available online (and there are a lot to be found!): making the website search engine friendly, submitting the website to as many internet directories as possible, post adverts about the products and services on free classified ads websites and include a link back to the website.

Promoting a website is a full-time job. Explanations on the different techniques will take up another article. Detailed instructions can also be found online. There are many online forums devoted to discussing SEO techniques. If you are ready to learn all that and put in the hard work to get your website to the top in the massively competitive space that is the internet then you might just realise your dream through an online business.

A firm believer in the importance of taking advantage of free advertising opportunities online such as free classified ads websites and free internet directories
