When Andrew J. Hart’s sons were severely injured in a car accident back in 1988, his number one priority was the same as that of any loving parent would be – helping his children heal. Andrew Jr. made a full recovery, however Julian suffered a brain stem injury that left him dependent on a wheelchair. It was a whole new world for him and his family, and anything but ideal – not only because of his own limited mobility, but also because of the design limitations of the wheelchairs themselves.
As an engineer, Hart couldn’t help but wonder about the logistics behind the design of conventional wheelchairs – be it a hospital wheelchair, airport wheelchair or wheelchair rental. Why is the seat so low? Why do I have to stoop down to push it? Why is the brake in such an awkward place?
Soon Hart discovered that he wasn’t the only one asking questions like these. So was a team of patients, nurses, doctors, transporters, volunteers, researchers and engineers behind the STAXI. "I got some unexpected answers," says Hart. "It turns out that those problematic elements of a wheelchair’s design were avoidable."
The STAXI is a modern design transport chair built specifically to the meet the transport needs of large facilities, including hospitals, airports and shopping malls. The STAXI struck Hart as an important opportunity to revolutionize the wheelchair industry. He purchased the patents to manufacture the STAXI in 1999 and he has been dedicated to realizing his vision every since. "My goal," says Hart, "is to ensure that people with mobility issues can confidently leave their homes knowing that a high-quality, reliable STAXI is available for them when they arrive at any public facility." Today the STAXI is the leading nesting transport chair system in the world thanks to features that Hart and his impressive team of designers have spent years perfecting:
* The seat is higher so you can easily make the transfer from chair to wheelchair, and vice versa * The handlebar is higher so you can push the STAXI without having to bend over * The automatic brake is on the handlebar so you can stop the chair with ease
"Although STAXI wasn’t designed for people like my son (who own their own wheelchairs)," says Hart, "I knew STAXI would make a difference in people’s lives and that it would lead the way toward an overall improvement in wheelchair design."
