Becoming a successful executive coach basically means finding prospective clients, selling them your services, and giving great value so that the next prospective client will be easier to get. However, many coaches get stuck right in the first step. They can't seam to find prospective clients. So here are some general tips for finding clients:
When someone goes hunting a deer, he goes into the forest. In a similar fashion, when you hunt for prospective executive coaching clients, you need to go where they dwell. And they dwell in the corporate world circles. So you need to go there two. Join business clubs and networks, both online and offline; Go to relevant trade shows and meetings in your area; go to the local golf club, or yacht club, or wherever the high earning people in your area goes.
Use your network of friends, family and even other people you only know a little to find possible clients or possible places to find them. When you approach such a person, do not ask for his help. Asking for help could make him feel like you are loading your burden onto him. Instead, ask him for advice. Ask him if he can suggest any idea where you may find a person who needs your service (or a similar question). Everyone likes to give advice. Thank 'the advisor' for his advice and the time he took with you. If he suggest a specific person for your services, or someone else you should talk to, ask him for his permission to mention that you were referred to them by him. It would help you when you make the contact, and help preserve your relationship with 'the advisor'.
Enlarge your network. Make new friends. Never miss an opportunity to present yourself and your profession. But don't become a marketing menace. Don't overdo it. Remember that you want people to remember you in a positive way, not as that "terrible pushy person".
Talk to people. More to the point – listen to people. When people talk, do they mention something related to the problems that you are offering your clients to solve? There are plenty of opportunities if you listen carefully.
Volunteer to events where you get exposure: Host or moderate events, join Q&A sessions, Join online communities and forums. Try to get invited to lecture or give presentations. Use any such event to leave a great impression, and also to widen your network.
List yourself in every relevant professional directory, online or offline. It will not bring you an avalanche of prospects, but you will be surprised from time to time when people get to you through such channels.
Be consistent. Make all the above into a habit. Set some time aside, tt least once a week, to think about your marketing. Ask yourself "What can I do more to find executive coaching clients?"
