Auction is the process of buying and selling goods through bidding. The goods are sold to the highest bidder. The word auction was derived from the Latin word "augere" which means increase. A minimum selling price is set for the goods and services for auction so that the actual market cost of the goods is covered and the company doesn’t face any loss. The buyer thus bids a higher amount. After the hammer has been hit no one can bid further.

Online auctions are one of the most popular types of auction carried out today. Here the buyer does not have to go to the action venue to buy the goods and services. He can just sit at his home or office and quote his bid online. It is a very good place to buy things at low prices. There are several online auction sites available. But by looking at different sites you can find the best one which suits you.

There are different types of online auctions like the straight auction, reserve auction, Dutch auction, private auction and overstock auction.

English Auction: This online auction is known as absolute auction. It is also known as an open ascending price auction. It is the traditional and the most common method of auctioning. Here the participants bid openly in front of one another. The reserve price of goods and services is announced by the auctioneer and the bidder gives his bid. The auction ends when no bidder wishes to bid further and the goods and services are sold to the highest bidder.

Dutch auction: In this type of online auction the auctioneer starts with the highest price and then lowers the price till the buyers accept the price offered. The goods are sold at the lowest price. The Dutch auction is known as an open descending price auction. It is widely used for selling perishable items.

Sealed first-price auction : In this auction the bidder submits the sealed bids to the auctioneer so that others do not know the bid amount offered. They are generally used for government tenders and contracts. Vickrey auctions are a kind of sealed bid auction. They are named after their creator Mr. William Vickrey.

Private auctions: At these online auctions the identities of all bidders are hidden. They are generally for expensive goods.

There are different auctions held for the different types of goods like car auctions, gun auctions, auto auctions etc.

Auto auctions are generally conducted by the government for the automobiles they seize because of unpaid bank loans.
Car auctions are conducted in both the traditional and online manner. There are various popular sites offering car auctions. They are conducted on daily, weekly or monthly basis. They are a good place to bid as the vehicles offered are in very good condition and that too at lesser price.

So you can now buy good things at an affordable price and quickly through online auctions.
