A collar with the dog’s name and your address on it will ensure that your dog is safely returned back if he ever gets lost. Doggie collars are also vital training aids. They can also be your dog’s style statement and yours in some cases. If you have ever tried going out to buy a collar for your little fur ball you know that the wide array of colors and styles are mind boggling.

There are so many different types of collars that it becomes a task to choose the one that will be perfect for your puppy or dog. If you have already been to the pet supply store and have come back empty handed because you just couldn’t decide on one, a person who can help you is your dog trainer.

Because the dog’s temperament will decide the appropriate collar for him, a trainer will certainly be able to assist you by gauging the dogs nature. If you are choosing the collar on your own, remember to choose a collar made of soft pliant material for a dog that is shy, calm and quiet in nature. On the other hand if your dog is a spit fire or stubborn with a biker boy personality well then you will have to go for something sturdy like a spiked collar or a fast jerk

If your dog is somewhere in between those two or if you haven’t yet spent enough time with your puppy to be sure about his temperament, go for a buckle range collar. These are the most standard types of collars available in the market.

They are made from cloth of various types and come in a range of patterns and colors. Since they are made of cloth you can also have your puppy’s name sewn on top. You could also go for a metal tag with your address and your dog’s name on it. It’s basically a cloth ribbon available in various widths with holes made .A buckle is attached to it which lets you increase or decrease the size of the collar.

Some wonderful variations which ensure your dogs safety in sudden adverse conditions are the break away collars and the quick taking away collars. Both these types give your dog extra safety from choking. The break away collar will give way under excess pressure. Where as the quick take away collars can be removed in a jiffy unlike normal buckle range collars

Another collar available in the market which is especially designed to serve as an obedience tool is a prong collar. There are many dogs that are prone to pulling and stubborn behavior when they are taken out for a walk. The prong collar helps to correct this behavior in your dog. As the name suggests there are regularly placed metal prongs on the inside of the collar. If your dog pulls on the leash the collar automatically tightens a little and these prongs poke the neck . This serves as a reminder for your dog and stops him from pulling.

This does sound dangerous but actually is as safe as a fast jerk because the dog will be poked only if he pulls on the leash.
