Opening a Travel Agency

Are you thinking of opening your own travel agency? If so, you need to keep a number of things in mind. Owning a travel business demands a certain level of skill and professionalism. It isn't just a matter of getting a license and plugging into a program. You want to create a long-term business, so seriously act upon the following advice.

For starters, specialize in something. Know that one thing inside and out. For instance, travel to Europe or eco-travel or African adventure travel. Find and study everything you can get your hands on in that thing. Become a genius. Too many travel agents will book you a cruise to nowhere or a flight to no man’s land and not know the difference between the two. It is absolutely impossible to know everything about every phase of travel…at least not in a short amount of time. So specialize. Imagine if your reputation as a knowledgeable resource in a specialized travel field grew. People would be flocking to your door seeking your advice and insight.

Become a notary public. If you’re scratching your head right now wondering what the heck this has to do with travel, directly, it doesn’t. You will find that many people who do have to travel, especially for business or legal reasons, will have to get things notarized. It is becoming increasingly difficult to locate a notary public. Your license in that regard becomes another point of connection with your customers and provide you with another minor income stream in your business.

Do not, under any circumstances, sign an exclusivity contract with any agency that you work for. That agency is unable to force you into such an agreement and you do not have to. Seriously consider seeking out the services of a lawyer here. Most would probably advise against signing such a contract. It may very well be against the law.

Becoming a travel agent is both lucrative and fulfilling is you do it right. Like I said, good ones are hard to find so if you really know your stuff, you will be greatly in demand. You will be sought out by eager travelers. That means more money for you in YOUR pocket. There's no telling how much. That is up to you and how much of yourself you put into the business. But you can do it!
