The world of nutritional supplements can be a mine field, more so if you have no knowledge of what the body needs, but still want to do all that you can to support your long-term good health. Here are some things to consider prior to picking vitamin and mineral supplements:

First, you should notice that different company's supplements are made up of different ingredients and at different levels. For example, some supplements may contain recommended daily allowances, where some include much more, advanced dosages. Taking in insufficient quantities may provide little benefit, where too much might be dangerous, so what is the solution?

In addition, your lifestyle may play an important role in determining what quantities of vitamins and minerals you require on a day-to-day basis. For example, if you are a smoker your needs could be higher. In addition to this, are you aware that if you train regularly, at high heart rates, then your needs are also higher? This is due to the fact that vitamins (or antioxidants) are needed to neutralise the damaging waste products produced as we process oxygen. Heavy exercise increases oxygen usage and hence, raises potentially damaging waste prducts known as free radicals.

A further worthwhile aspect to note is the quality of the supplement. As nutritionals only have to be manufactured to food standards to comply with industry's legislation, it is sometimes hard for manufacturers to control exactly what goes in to their nutritionals. Products could get contaminated, or might not end up with identical dosages in every individual tablet and our bodies' ideally need consistency!

As a former health professional I am of the opinion that it is more sensible to provide our bodies with surplus, providing the levels that we intake are not in harmful dosages. By providing our bodies with surplus, it can utilise as much as it requires and reject what is not required. Vitamins and minerals that are not needed will be excreted and so will not adversely affect our health.

Some nutritionals manufacturers produce nutritionals to pharmaceutical manufacturing standards, so they have greater control of the makeup of each tablet. This also dramatically reduces the chance of contamination with harmful, or illegal substances. With this noted, I also recommend selecting nutritionals that are of a pharmaceutical standard.

To summarise, you are better selecting pharmaceutical grade nutritionals, which provide advanced levels of nutrients.
