Creating backup is most excellent way to prevent data loss and in Exchange Server, you can easily backup entire database to either an online or offline storage media. When a database corruption like situation occurs, you can easily restore database from backup. But in some situations, when you attempt to restore database from backup or automated system recovery runs, the process may terminate halfway with Event ID 454 that indicates database corruption. This behavior of Exchange Server results into critical data loss and require Exchange Recovery to be sorted out.

In a practical scenario, you might encounter the following event in Application Even Log of Exchange Server: Date: date Source: ESE Time: time Category: Logging/Recovery Type: Error Event ID: 454 User: N/A Computer: Server name

Description: Information Store (976) Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error Error Number. Event ID 454 is the generic event, which shows some problems either with the recovery or restore operation of Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 Information Store. Usually the Event ID 454 indicates that the Exchange Server has determined any of the following things:

Files in the running set of the database are missing.

Files in the running set of the database have been replaced with dissimilar versions.

Files in the running set of the database are damaged.

In such cases, the Exchange Server database can not be accessed and thus you come across data loss situations. In order to gain access of your valuable data, you are required to find out the cause of this behavior and go for Exchange Repair by sorting it out.

Common reasons and solutions for this problem

This issue might occur when Exchange ESE (Extensible Storage Engine) attempts to fetch all databases in storage group into consistent state during recovery process. To sort out this issue, either restore database from backup or locate missing database and move it to proper folder.

You may come across this problem when you attempt to achieve restore operation to recovery service and Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store doesn't have access to the Active Directory in production environment. To fix this problem and perform Exchange Repair, copy all transaction logs, which you like to recover to temporary folder that was defined during transaction process.

If above methods do not work, then the problem could be due to database corruption. In such scenarios, it is required to repair and restore the database using powerful Exchange Recovery applications. These tools allow you to have quick, easy and safe recovery in most of the EDB corruption scenarios.

Stellar Phoenix Mailbox Exchange Recovery is the most effective and advanced software to handle majority of EDB corruption cases. It works well with Exchange Server 2003, 2000 and 5.5. This software is compatible with Windows 2003, XP and 2000.
