The diet-book and the low-carb diet. During the 1850's a physician named Doctor Harvey in England had to treat a patient named William Banting regarding obesity. Harvey advised him to cut down the sugars and starches He also told the patient that he should not eat anything extra other than the required amount so this was the first diet which had low carb The plan worked so well, that William Banting was able to write a book about the diet The book was published in 1862 and was called Letter on Corpulence Addressed to the Public. This book also came to be the very first diet book in history.
Chewing the food in the right manner
During the end of the 19th Century, William Gladstone, Britain's 4 times Prime Minister, had advised that food must be chewed 32 times, before it is swallowed This ultimately resulted in losing weight. This also lessens the appetite of one's to a great extent.
This advice that was given by the Prime Minister was very much influential and it also led to title of Great Masticator who was named Horace Fletcher. However on the other hand, he also gave the people another step that the food that is taken must be chewed till it got liquefied. He also advised that all kinds of meat must be avoided along with tea, coffee and alcohol . It was also him who spread the principle that people shouldn't eat until they felt hungry and that people should have a happy disposition during meal times
Calories taken
After this there came a chemist with new ideas. He was named Wilbur Atwater. He was the one who discovered the caloric value of all types of food. but when he suggested this there were not more takers. But after almost twenty years people believed in this and made it something very important for dieting people said we must have a count of calories when we eat food and this was actually suggested by a doctor named Lulu Hunt Peters Since it was a scientific method of losing fat, people were enthusiastic about it and it sold like pancakes
Combinations of food The theory proposed earlier were modified and it was known that the amount of food we have doesn't matter and only the type of food we intake matters . his concept was introduced by William Hay after few years. He also held on to the theory that sugars, proteins and starches must be eaten separately in order to avoid adding extra pounds.
Increase in food varieties, increase in weight
In due course, most people got exposure to various kinds of food . With people's comfort rising up, fast foods became very predominant. This paved way to different food diets as people found it difficult to lose weight. Most of them follow the above diets
