The Pushkar Fair in Rajasthan takes place in a small town of Pushkar, located 14 kilometers off Ajmer in Rajasthan. Pushkar is ideally situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by hills on three sides and sand dunes on the other. The best season to visit Pushkar is in the winters which extend from the month of October to March. Probably this is the reason why the fair takes place during this time.

The place, Pushkar is considered holy by the local people. It is among the five dhams or pilgrimages in India, the others being Puri, Badrinath, Rameswaram and Dwarka. The most colorful fair of the Thar Desert begins on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi and continues for five days till Kartik Purnima.

In the holy Pushkar Fair in Rajasthan, the tourists are not allowed to have alcohol and non-vegetarian food. Besides merry-making, the villagers witness the largest cattle fairs in the country during this fair. Various animals are brought here from different places. They are traded here. You can see many camels being brought here from far places and getting their masters exchanged. To have a good bargain, the masters clean and decorate their camels with finery and jewelry. You can see camels wearing jewelry of silver and beads. They wear silver bells and bangles around their ankles. Sometimes, the camel's noses are also pierced.

Another integral feature of the Pushkar Fair Rajasthan is the races and competitions. The tourists can find the camels darting across the sands amidst cheers and jeers from audience. They even throw their riders on to the vast sands. The most interesting competition held here is the camel beauty contest. The camels are decorated with care and paraded. They preen before the crowds and get a lot of attention from the crowd.
