Genital herpes is one of the most sexually transmitted diseases and is caused by the herpes simplex virus. Genital herpes is a lifelong disease. It is a virus which will never disappear but remains hidden and dormant in the nerve roots (ganglia). You can get it from having sex, even oral sex. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease herpes, but two main types that one can suffer from, depending on which herpes virus causes the infection – Type 1 herpes HSV-1 or Type 2 HSV-2.

Genital herpes also increases the risk of HIV infection because HIV can enter the body more easily whenever there's a break in the skin (such as a sore) during unprotected sexual contact. In addition, if a pregnant woman with genital herpes has an active infection during childbirth, the newborn baby is at risk for getting herpes infection. Genital herpes is spread easily.
The virus from an infected person can enter your body by passing through a break in your skin or through the tender skin of your mouth, penis or vagina, urinary tract opening, cervix, or anus.
Genital herpes lesions are usually worse the first 5 days and then gradually the pain and discomfort decreases.
