Sometimes, the best part of your outfit is your designer handbag. Although most people usually would consider the handbag and accessories a complement to the clothing a woman wears, this is not necessarily the case when you carry a designer bag. Depending on just how spectacular your bag is, the clothing and accessories can take a backseat to the handbag. If this is the case, or if you really want to showcase your designer handbag, you will need to know how to play it up and show off your handbag as well as possible.
If you have a solid or monochromatic bag, you can showcase it by wearing clothing that is patterned. A woman who carries a large, square tan tote, for example, will look stunning in a pair of gingham checked linen pants in the summer or a pair of plaid wool pants in the winter. Couple either of these with a black or white top and shoes that don’t detract from the handbag and you have a winning combination of clothes, accessories and handbag.
Think about it: Haven’t you walked past a woman wearing an amazing handbag, and you admire it because she wears it so well? Chances are you would not have stopped in your tracks to take notice of the bag if she didn’t showcase it properly. It may be subtle, but her appropriate choices of clothing and accessories are what make the bag standout. If you have a brightly patterned bag, or one with neutral tones but a busy design, you are going to want to wear solids for your pants, shirt or dress.
Another point to consider is what you are wearing on your feet. Why? You don’t want to wear shoes that clash with the hardware or features of your handbag. For example, if you are wearing shoes that are not dainty or streamlined but tend to make a statement, you are going to want to choose another pair for the day that you wear your designer handbag which should also, clearly, be making a statement. Shoes that are bold or shoes that have large buckles and eye-catching metals should not necessarily be worn with a bag that also has large buckles and eye-catching metals. First of all, it will detract from the beauty of your bag. Second, it may just put the whole look over-the-top and turn it from classy and noticeable to gaudy. You want to tow this line quite carefully.
Mixed metals are features that are always up for debate, but many women err on the safe side here. When carrying your favorite handbag, it is probably wise to do the same and make certain to wear shoes and other accessories that are of the same tone. If you are wearing a designer bag with gold hardware, opt for shoes with gold buckles or closures as opposed to brass or silver. If you really must wear a certain pair of shoes with the outfit of your choice and they clash with your bag, your best bet is to leave that bag for another day.
Likewise, you do not want your jewelry to clash with your designer handbag. You probably have very good taste in jewelry if you have such good taste in bags. However, you need to know how to coordinate the two. If your bag has platinum hardware, that is the right time to pull out the platinum jewels or wear the watch with the platinum band, especially if the watch is large or noticeable. Consider the proximity of the jewelry to the handbag. You will be wearing your watch on your wrist, and reaching into your bag often. You will be carrying the handbag over your shoulder, or on your elbow, or even your wrist. All of these ‘locations’ are in close proximity to your jewels: Your shoulder is right by your ears and necklace, your wrist and elbow are close to your hands. If you should wear clashing metals, they would be quite noticeable here.
