A Guide to PCB Design

Printed Circuit Board, or PCB, is layered insulator made from electrical conductors. Its designing is one aspect that requires reasonable knowledge and expertise; it can be a time-consuming and frustrating process. The software for schematic capture offers other advantage- tools such as OrCAD Pspice allow users to actually create a simulation of the final circuit design.
1 Designing Footprint of Circuit Components- drawing an outline of different components that actually get placed on the circuit base.
2 PCB Outline- this step allows gauging the overall component numbers and area to be used on the circuit board. Serves as a checkpoint before the actual designing process begins.
3 Set up Design Checklist- before placing the various components, it helps to set a rule list of the procedure.
4 Component Placement- this step involves the physical placement of various components on the circuit board, and making them fit together.
5 Manual Route Tracing- the power and other parameters need to be manually traced to ensure the workability of the circuit.
6 Implementing Auto Router- some traces are too tedious to do manually; for these, there are auto tracers that do the job and save days of manual labour.
7 Design Rule Checker- most design software packages have the provision to check designs. There can be manual errors during PCB spacing which get rectified using the checker.
8 Output Gerber Files- once the circuit board is complete in all respects, and verified to be error-free, the last step in pcb design process is to output the gerber files. These files are universally uniform and essential components in the creation of circuit designs.
