Timeless: The Amish Rocking Chair

The image is timeless: a mother rocking a chubby and sleeping infant in a well-worn but still beautiful rocking chair. The creak of the floorboards and the light thump of the rocker shifting back and forth on the floor fills the background, with a light tune sung quietly to carry the little one off to slumber.
Or, perhaps the image you see when you hear the words Amish rocking chair" differ. Consider this same infant, grown now to a toddler, climbing up into the wide seat with a big smile and his favorite blanket in tow. He’s so happy to be a big boy now that can climb onto his very own chair and rock all by himself.
Move on a little further into the future… the Amish rocking chair now resides in the sitting room of the house. The baby is school age and no longer interested in rocking for fun. But, when he reads his book, his favorite place to be is the quiet sitting room that has the right kind of light for reading, rocking slowly as he follows the story to the next page.
The little one is grown now, off on his own, and his Mother is left at home with the Amish rocking chair. She likes to sit in it in the evening with a good book or her knitting, sipping a cup of tea and winding down from the day.
Her son has come to visit with her new grandchild. As soon as they're in the door, she scoops up her granddaughter and moves into the sitting room, bringing along the blanket she has knit for the child, and sits down in the comfortable seat to rock. She sings some of the same tunes she sang to the child’s father when he was a baby and she is transports back to a time when she was younger, when her son was the babe in her arms. Relishing the ability to tie the moments together, the consistency is in the Amish rocking chair that was the backdrop of so many of her family’s memories.
