Slip and fall accidents may be considered one of the most common accidents at home. Reuters Health reported that slips and fall accidents involving children and teenagers—occurred mostly in their bathrooms.

"Most of these injuries are from slips and falls that could be avoided simply by making bathtub and shower surfaces—and bathroom floors, too—less slippery," said Dr. Gary Smith, Director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Columbus, Ohio's Nationwide Children's Hospital.

At least 40,000 children and teens are rushed to emergency rooms for these preventable injuries. The usual causes are:

• In more than 80 percent of cases, injuries were related to slips, trips, or falls.

• Most injuries (more than 70 percent) occurred in a bathtub.

• More than half the injuries were in children under the age of 4 years.

• Lacerations were the most common injury, occurring in nearly 60 percent of cases.

• The most frequently injured body part was the face, followed by the head and neck.

Apparently, the required standards for slip resistance of bathroom features such as bath tubs, toilets and sinks are not current. Thus this serves as a wake-up call for the industry to do something about it.

Here are steps for you to follow to prevent you and your family from having slip and fall accidents:

• Have slip-resistant bath mats both inside and outside of tubs and showers.

• Install grab bars to prevent falls among older children.

• Cover fixtures, such as faucets and handles, with padding so that if children do fall, they don't hit sharp edges.

• Children under the age of five are in the highest-risk group for bathroom injuries.

The grounds for filing a personal injury claim are based on "Tort Law, which covers all personal injury claims filed in either the insurance companies or the civil courts."
