In the past, getting an education meant sitting in a classroom with other students while the teacher lectured. Classes were only offered at set times. Today, thanks to the widespread use of the Internet, distance learning has grown in popularity. Distance learning is a type of education in which students are not confined to the classroom. There are many benefits to this type of learning.
Distance learning allows students to pursue their educational goals on their own schedule. With traditional educational institutions, you must try to arrange your schedule around when they offer classes. Distance education, on the other hand, offers the flexibility to take classes when you can.
Distance learning opens more educational paths. With local schools, you are limited to their course offerings. If the school does not offer the course you want, you have to travel to another school, which may or may not be close, or settle for another type of degree. With distance learning, you can select from a number of institutions to pursue your degree.
Distance learning is flexible. In the traditional education method, the instructor chooses what will be covered and when it will be covered. Homework, assignments and tests are given on their schedule. Distance education allows you to set your own schedule. If you have a family vacation planned in the middle of your course, you can take it without worrying that you will fall behind. Once you return from vacation, you can pick back up where you left off.
Distance learning can help you climb the corporate ladder. With the flexibility of distance education, you can take classes around your work schedule. The more skills you are able to offer your employer, the more valuable you are to them. This can result in an increase of pay or promotions.
Distance learning can be more financially feasible than traditional learning. Traditional schools have higher overhead. This translates into higher tuition costs. In addition, you may have costs for housing, transportation and food. Since distance education facilities have less overhead, they can offer you lower tuitions. In some cases, you may even be able to take some classes at no cost.
Distance learning can allow you to change career paths without giving up your current career. You can continue working in your current career while you pursue your education. Once you have finished your degree, then you can find other employment in your new career.
Distance learning encourages communication between instructors and students. The learning management system chat rooms, students forums, instant messaging, telephone and email allow students to speak with instructors or fellow students when they need assistance or have questions.
Distance learning allows accessibility anywhere you have Internet access. Take your laptop to the park and study while your children are playing. If you travel for business, log in from your hotel room. Anywhere you have a computer and Internet access, you can further your education.
These are just a few of the many benefits of distance learning. Like most things, it is not for everyone. However, for those with the drive and motivation to follow it through, it can be a great way to further your education.
