If you have had a history of difficulty in achieving your goals it is likely because your approach has been flawed. In order to accomplish goals of any kind you need to do more than just 'click your heels' and state your desires. An important part of goal planning is establishing how it is you intend to motivate yourself and most importantly stay that way!

Have a look at a straight forward 3 step no nonsense approach you can use time and again to motivate yourself to accomplish goals you have set.

Establishing Your Why

This is the most important step towards achieving any goals you may want to establish for yourself. This step will involve your own honesty and objectivity. You will need to consider whether the changes you want are something you can realistically accomplish or if in fact you really even want to. If it is not all that important to you how do you expect to accomplish it?

Goal setting requires a real desire or you will only end up wasting your time and efforts and in doing so you are inviting frustration and discouragement. Having experienced previous frustrations and failure towards reaching any goals may influence you as to whether you will even try again in the future. Consider that, a future without any goals!

If you are going to invest the effort make sure you have the desire to follow through on it and only you can determine the 'real' level of your desire.

Remind Yourself of the Benefits

What are your 'whys' for making the change? Well you will want to constantly remind yourself why it is you want to achieve the goals you are striving for or make the changes you want. This will be a continual process that you will need to maintain to motivate yourself and keep you moving in the right direction.

Make the Environment Work for You!

Create or change the environment to help support the change or the goals you are striving to make or reach. Whether it is a complete change of environment or simply making subtle changes to your existing surroundings you want these changes to be supportive of your actions. This also could involve surrounding yourself with any people who are supportive of the changes you want to make.

Achieving your goals is not as hard as it sometimes seems as long as you stay committed to completing those tasks necessary to reach your objectives. A key component of the goal planning process is establishing how you intend to maintain your motivation. If you lack the willingness to invest the time and effort needed you WILL fail every time. The 3 step approach we reviewed here will serve to keep you focus and driven towards your goals provided they are something you want badly enough to begin with!
