Oils are natural remedies for many conditions, and among them are the treatment and prevention of dog fleas. Helpful tips are provided in this article.

A lot of people today resort to the use of natural treatment methods to get rid of dog fleas. While there are topical ointments and sprays available, natural remedies have become the favored choice. Among the most popular natural treatments would be the use of essential oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, and tea tree.

Here are tips and guidelines that you can use:

  1. Essential oils can be used as a flea repellent. A good time to start using it would be during the winter season. Fleas hate the cold season which puts them at an all-time low, although this may not necessarily hold true for homes with central heating.

To make the repellent bath, what you need are the following:

-3 drops of lavender

-2 drops of lemon grass

-3 drops of citronella essential oil

Mix these components to form a repellent bath solution, and use it regularly when bathing your dog. Areas to put in top priority are: base of his tail, areas between the paws, his ears, and the back of the ears.

To make a repellent spray, here is what you need to do:

Fill an old spray container with water. Add approximately 8 drops of lavender essential oil, and shake it to achieve uniform mixture. Then spray it on your dog’s skin and fur, particularly his neck and tail, as well as his back. Make sure to cover your dog’s eyes when you spray the neck area. When spraying, check if you can see small black flakes as these are flea excrements which need to be treated with medication.

Frequency of treatment:

Consistency is very important so make sure you do the following:

• Lavender bath-twice a week

• Spray- once daily

  1. You will not only apply the essential oils on your dog, but also on the sleeping area (basket) as well as his beddings. You need to wash these items using 2-4 drops of essential oils, specifically, eucalyptus, mixed in hot water. This method can do two things: rid of fleas and eliminate dust mites as well.

  2. Since you also need to make sure your house is completely free from dog fleas, it is recommended that you make a floor cleaning solution. Mix 4-8 drops of lavender essential oil with a lavender-scented detergent and then wipe your floors and walls using a cloth soaked in this home-made solution.

Treatment of Flea Bites

Most likely, you will find several flea bites in your dog’s skin. To treat this, you need to use tea tree essential oil or undiluted lavender essential oil since both have excellent antiseptic properties. If you use tea tree essential oil, 2-3 drops should be mixed with a cup of water. Use cotton balls to clean the affected area.

Once your dog is free from fleas, keep it that way by making sure he is well-groomed, fit, and healthy. Exercise and a healthy diet are necessary since unhealthy dogs are more susceptible to flea infestation.
