They may or may not have the exact kind of dog you prefer, but we can almost guarantee that when you pay a visit they will have some beautiful small dogs that you will fall in love with. About one out of every four dogs in a shelter is a purebred, so you just might be able to find the perfect one on your first visit.

You can specify the distance from the zip code, and sort by any combination of breed, gender, size, color and age. If you are not in a hurry to adopt, they even have a service that will notify you by email when new small dogs are added that match the search criteria you entered. That's a very nice service and many dog lovers have found their perfect pet this way.

A recent search for small dogs (under 25 pounds) within 35 miles of our zip code yielded 39 dogs. Most of them had been neutered and were up-to-date on all their shots. While there may not be many free dog adoptions nearby, the adoption fees for some of the area dogs we looked at through the adoptapet.com search page ranged from about $50 to around $100. That's really a great price for, what in many cases, were purebred small dogs.
