Here are some tips on cleaning window blinds.

Tips for Cleaning Window Blinds that are Aluminum:
When cleaning widow blinds that are aluminum, you can use a damp cloth or sponge with a mild detergent. Use cold or warm water never hot when cleaning window blinds that are aluminum. First put a protective covering on the floor if necessary.
Then tilt the slats. Wipe each slat individually and let air-dry.

Another way to clean window blinds that are aluminum is to take them down and put them in a tub with warm or cold soapy water. Make sure to line your tub with paper or an old mat so as not to scratch your tub enamel. When soaking them add vinegar to the water so the strings don’t rot. When cleaning window blinds this way let them soak for about thirty minutes making sure the slats don’t stick together. After getting them sufficiently cleaned you rinse them off and either wipe them dry enough to hang and complete their drying process by air-drying. One other trick to use is when they dry you can wipe them with a fabric softener cloth so the dust takes longer to accumulate next time.

The slats on aluminum blinds are quite smooth so it is very easy to dust them periodically. If you choose to dust them you can use ordinary soft clean dust cloths as well as chemically treated dust cloths. You can also use a vacuum cleaner with brush attachments. When using a vacuum, use light pressure along the slat so it doesn’t bend. There are also various household cleaners found at your local store.

Tips for Cleaning Window Blinds that are Wooden:
Care has to be taken when cleaning window blinds that are wooden. Although the wood is sealed that is used in wooden blinds excessive water and dampness can cause warping and discoloration. WASHING THEM IS NOT RECOMMENDED. They can be dusted, and a good wood polish can be used to preserve the wood.

Tips for Cleaning Window Blinds that are Fabric Pleated:
Most cellular blinds are anti-static and require little cleaning.
A light sweep of a vacuum cleaner brush can do the trick. If you wish a more complete cleaning you can wipe them down with a damp cloth as well using ONLY luke warm water. For opaque or black out shades be extremely careful not to crease and do not immerse them in water. For tough stains try a mild detergent on the spot.

In general an easy “cleaning window blinds” trick is to use a cleaning mitt, old sock or glove and run your hand over the length of the slat. Depending on the dust level in ones house cleaning window blinds should occur from once a month to every 3 or 4 months.
