There are so many choices now days in how to approach a window treatment. The first thing however, is you always need to keep the width and height of the window you are dressing in mind. The next thing you want to consider is the whole room in relation to the window. Once you have these two elements fixed in your mind you can start to get creative. Is the window that you are working on going to be the focus point in the room or just blend into the rest of the decorating theme?

Lighting is also an important consideration when deciding how you are going to do a window. Shades and blinds today come in many variations and styles to compliment a room. If itís a living room you may not mind light coming in during morning hours, on the other hand if you sleep late you may not want the sun entering your bedroom early. So, there are options from opaque to total black out shades. If you are going blinds with your window treatment then the closer the slats are the more light is omitted from the room. If the window is very wide you may want to consider vertical blinds.

The materials you choose for your blinds and shades can also compliment the style of a room these days. If you have a rustic or natural theme, bamboo shades and wooden blinds may do the trick. If you have a historic room theme you may go with fabric shades or vertical fabric blinds that compliment your upholstery.

Once you decide the type of shade or blinds you are going to use, you can top things off with either matching or complimenting Valances and swags, curtains or even drapes. In my bedroom I have a Victorian look. I accomplished look in a unique way. I keep my blinds half drawn with a matching valance and Victorian window screens on the lower half of the window. It is absolutely beautiful. The screens go up to where the blinds are drawn down to the windowsill.

What ever you decide to do with your windows make sure it is easy to care for. You donít want anything that is so complicated itís a project to clean. Now days most blinds and shades are relatively easy to clean. You can wipe them when they are dusty with a cloth, as per the manufacturerís instructions. The main thing is to enjoy the decorating experience rather than look on it as a chore.
