As our bodies get older, they naturally become more susceptible to injuries. Women typically start losing muscle mass as young as thirty. To me, this is alarming. I firmly believe that we need to give our bodies all of the help we can to resist this degenerative process, especially with all of the resources we have at our disposal in this day and age.
Information About Injuries, Ailments, or Anything Else -
For one thing, we have such unprecedented access to information. Of course I'm talking about the Internet, but I also mean books and television. You can find an educational T.V. show on nearly anything you might want to know about-heck, a lot of subjects have their own channels. And if a show is on at a time at which you're unable to watch, we're no longer relegated to the Dark Ages of recording on a VHS tape on the VCR.
What I'm getting at is that information about how to take care of your body, especially your aging body, is widely available. Now, sorting through that information to determine fact from fiction can be another story, but if you check more than one source on most topics you'll usually identify some valid consensus.
The Importance of Exercise to Strengthen the Body -
With that said, let me throw some of my own information at you. To me, this is just common sense, but here you go: there are exercises you can do and vitamin and nutrient supplements you can take to prevent injuries and illness-or to help your body heal quicker if they do occur.
For example, hip replacement surgery is a common procedure these days. We all know that hip injuries are bad, especially when you're older. Sometimes people get hip replacements to prevent injuries, and sometimes because of them. Either way, strengthening exercises can actually improve the condition of the hip prior to surgery and help with healing after.
I will also maintain that starting an everyday exercise regimen, especially one containing strengthening exercises, earlier in life and long before hip worries ever begin, will possibly prevent it from ever becoming an issue. I own a breed of dog prone to hip dysphasia, and I'm pretty adamant about walking him everyday, because I know that exercise will decrease the likelihood of him being afflicted by that condition-or prolong the amount of time we have before he does, or make it not as severe if it does prove inevitable.
Helping to Heal -
This is precisely the point: sometimes we can't prevent, but we can make it not so bad when it does happen. Stronger, healthier muscles and bones heal faster and better, and often the injury is not as severe in the first place.
Exercise may not always show immediate results, but I promise that if you keep at it, you will show a marked long-term improvement in health, both physical and mental. Also, with all of these wonderful research tools at your fingertips, I advise looking into the benefits of chiropractic care for both the prevention and treatment of injury and ailment. In my opinion, chiropractic and physical therapy combined heal better than anything else!
