ISO i.e International Organization for Standardization but it is widely known as ISO.

Mostly peoples always confused with its name because IOS is the right acronym for International Organization for Standardization.

ISO is derived from the Greek word isos, which means equal, the prefix -iso occurs in many words also like isonomy that is equality of law. So From equal to "standard," the choice of ISO as the name of the organization is easy to follow. Due to it’s same meaning in different languages i.e to equalize, SO founders choose it for it’s shorter name.

It is an international standard composed of representatives from various national standards organizations. ISO founded on 23 February 1947,has it’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

In 1979, the British Standards Institution (BSI) also developed the first commercial standard for quality systems that became known as BS 5750. That same year, BSI issued its first certificate to a small cement plant in England for compliance with BS 5750. It took almost another decade for the international community to recognize the benefits of standards for quality systems.

In 1987 , ISO released it’s ISO 9000 series that incorporating most of the elements of BS 5750 into its ISO 9001 standard .This ISO 9000 series firstly became popular in Europe and they adopted ISO 9000 standardization .In late 90’s ISO 9000 standards had reached the U.S. market.
