ISO History - An Overview.

ISO i.e International Organization for Standardization but it is widely known as ISO.

Mostly peoples always confused with its name because IOS is the right acronym for International Organization for Standardization.

ISO is derived from the Greek word isos, which means equal, the prefix -iso occurs in many words also like isonomy that is equality of law. So From equal to "standard," the choice of ISO as the name of the organization is easy to follow. Due to itís same meaning in different languages i.e to equalize, SO founders choose it for itís shorter name.

It is an international standard composed of representatives from various national standards organizations. ISO founded on 23 February 1947,has itís headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

ISO main purpose is to maintain the International Standards that is applicable to world wide for any type of Organization ,Initially in itís primary days ,ISO has focused on product based companies ,to standardized the products like their size , weight and quality also .ISO made rules for products qualities and after reviewing the products , it issues certification to companies .After some time it became a law for the organizations to be ISO Certified for manufacturing the Quality products,

ISO also published itís technical reports, technical specification, Guides that is publicly available to anyone to know the ISO Standards and find the products quality.

We can say thanks to ISO standards because they made quality standards for all type of organization from manufacturer to developers ,small to large scale industries, also includes Educational Institutes so we are getting quality Education .

If we go back to History again, In 1959, the U.S. Department of Defense released a quality management program under the designation MIL-Q-9858.This standard was primarily used in the U.S. defense and aerospace industries.

In 1979, the British Standards Institution (BSI) also developed the first commercial standard for quality systems that became known as BS 5750. That same year, BSI issued its first certificate to a small cement plant in England for compliance with BS 5750. It took almost another decade for the international community to recognize the benefits of standards for quality systems.
In 1987 , ISO released itís ISO 9000 series that incorporating most of the elements of BS 5750 into its ISO 9001 standard .This ISO 9000 series firstly became popular in Europe and they adopted ISO 9000 standardization .In late 90ís ISO 9000 standards had reached the U.S. market.

ISO 9000 Certification provides detailed information about Quality Standards, Quality Auditing, Quality Control, and Quality Assurance by the QMS Consultants.
