Creating your own luck; How forum posting can get your band noticed

There are many new recording artists in the world of music today who are looking for their lucky break, their chance to make it big in the world of music. Some of them will make it and others will not. What sets the groups apart is their luck.

Yes, I did say it was all about luck but now let's qualify that statement. There are recording artists who will see fame with virtually no work involved. These lucky individuals just happen to be in the right place at the right time and they catch the notice of the right people in the music industry. Then there are the rest of us. Those of us in the other class of lucky individuals are the part of the group that creates their own luck. This is the group that the self help guru Brian Tracy was referring to when he said, "I’ve found that luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances. Be more active. Show up more often."

For the recording artist, publicity is very important. Without publicity, you can never get your musical message out in front of the people. So creating that kind of publicity is one of the way we "show up more often" as Mr .Tracy phrased it. One of the ways to actively pursue this kind of publicity is to venture into the places where your target audience hangs out so for the first step, you need to know your target audience.

Just as you would not go hunting African elephants on the Antarctic tundra, you can't just randomly choose an Internet location and say this is the spot. You wouldn't have much luck with the elephant hunting expedition mentioned earlier and you most likely would not fare much better in your quest for publicity. Instead, take a few moments to determine who your target audience is and what they are into. For example, are the people who buy your merchandise at concerts teenagers, mid-twenties, or thirty-somethings? The group that your music has the most appeal for is your target audience. Now, we all know they love your music but what else are they into?

If your target audience is teens, they probably aren't into the same heavy philosophical discussions as a 35 year old college professor would be. You may be more likely to find them in forums discussing electronics and video games or popular television and music. The mid-twenty crowd is likely to be starting families of their own so you can expect to find them in forums relating to the issues new families face such as home repair and children. You may still find some of the mid-twenty crowd in the video game rooms and you might find some of the teens in the philosophy forums but the point is, for the most part, you can make a pretty fair assumption of where your target audience can be found according to who they are.

Once you have determined who your target audience is and where their other interests lie, it's time to get interested in those same things, at least a little bit, because you are going to become a contributing member of every forum you can find that discusses those issues. You are going to want to take an active and educated part in the conversations on these forums with a tasteful link to your music included in your signature on every post you make. Why? Because this is where the luck is made, by "showing up more often".
