Type 2 Diabetes is a disorder in the metabolism which results from the inability of the body to create enough insulin. It is called non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). The body can't move glucose (blood sugar) into the cells without enough production or use of insulin. It is a constant disease with no known cure. Diabetes mellitus is the most common form.

Risk factor - is anything which increases the chance of a person to develop a disease. It can be some activities like smoking, family history or diet, or some other things. These factors can add to the person's risk, but they don't necessarily cause the ailment.

The following are some of the risk factors

  • Age- People above 45 years of age are high risks for the disease

  • Family history

  • Being overweight

  • Not having regular exercise

  • Ethnicity and race - Being members of racial and ethnic groups, like African- Americans, Hispanic

Americans and Native Americans increase the risk for type ll diabetes.

  • History of diabetes in pregnancy, delivery of a baby that weighs more than nine pounds.

  • Low level of good cholesterol or HDL (high density lipoprotein)

  • High level of triglycerides

Treatment

Specific medication for type ll diabetes must be determined by your doctor based on the following:

  • age, medical history and overall health

  • extent of the illness

  • tolerance for exact treatment, procedures and therapies

  • expectations for the path of the disease

  • your preference or opinion

  • proper diet

  • control of weight

  • an accurate exercise program

  • regular inspection of the foot

  • oral medications, insulin replacement and other medications as directed by the physician.
