Gardens are interesting and fun to have. Normally they are not a lot of work, unless you have a huge garden or plant plants that require a lot of maintenance. The work involved in having a nice garden is usually pleasurable unless you neglect any needed care and let things get out of control. In spite of the relatively nature of home gardens there are containers and tools that are useful for giving your garden plants the care they need:
1. Containers used to protect the plants. 2. Tools used to apply insecticides and fungicides.
Containers and Collars Of the containers, the most useful type is the covered frame. It usually consists of a small wooden box, about eighteen inches to two feet square and about eight inches high. It is covered with either protective cloth, mosquito netting or mosquito wire, or even glass. The coverings or glass cover have the additional advantage of retaining heat and protecting the plants from the cold. That makes it possible to plant earlier than is otherwise advisable because of the extra protection from the elements. These containers are used extensively in getting an early and safe start with cucumbers, melons and the other vine vegetables. Depending on your area it can also offer protection against the dreaded gopher that can wreck havoc on any garden.
Simpler devices for protecting newly planted plants, such as tomatoes or cabbage, from the cut-worm and other pests are tin, stiff cardboard, or tar paper collars. They should be several inches high and large enough to be put around the stem of the plant. The collars should penetrate an inch or so into the soil. They offer protection against certain crawling insects and worms that do not burrow deep into the soil.
Sprayers There are several kinds of poison powders you can apply to your plants. The gardener needs to get a powder gun to spray these poison powders. It is recommended you get one of the hand-power, compressed-air sprayers. These are used for applying wet sprays. They use different types of mist-making nozzles, the non-clogging automatic type being best for your garden use.
For more extensive work, a barrel pump, mounted on wheels, is desirable, but not really necessary for an average size home garden. These spraying tools will help you do a lot of work in little time. Extension rods may be needed for spraying trees and vines in order to be able to reach the higher areas to be sprayed. For use on a very small scale, a good hand-syringe can be used. However, as a general rule it would be better to invest a few more dollars for a small tank sprayer. They squirt a continuous stream or spray and hold considerably more spraying solution. They save a lot of time and work compared to a much smaller hand-syringe.
Whatever type sprayer you decide to buy, get a brass machine. Brass will out-wear several of the cheaply made sprayers. The major problem with cheap sprayers is that quickly corrode due to the action of the strong poisons and chemicals you spray. It's not worth the savings in money to buy them when you have to keep buying sprayers on a regular basis.
