Most people cringe at the thought of science projects. When we think of science projects we think of people in lab coats that can spout off a number of equations in record time. Or we picture men behind glass walls measuring liquid into containers and then mixing them together. What we fail to realize is science is not just about men in lab coats or about chemistry, science is about the world around us.

Most schools have science fairs and of course in a science fair you are going to have your super smart kids displaying these huge projects that can do something amazing and you have the kids who just keep it simple and provide a model of the solar system. You might often wonder how my kid, who is not very interested in science, can compete with those kids who are the next Noble Prize winner. While your kid might not be the next Nobel Prize winner, you can still help them complete a science fair project that they will be proud of.

One of the great things about science projects is that it can cover just about any area of our world and you can help your child pick a science project that they will be interested in. Before even deciding on a science project you and your child should sit down and discuss what kinds of things you would like to do. Science projects can be about fossils, air, outer space, dinosaurs, they can invent something, and the list goes on. By picking a project that your child is interested in you are going to make the learning process a lot more fun for your child.

One of the advantages to doing a science project with your child is that you can spend quality time with your children. Parents are always trying to find more ways to spend time with their kids and a science project is a great opportunity. If you like plants you and your child can plant a garden and tend to it together, science projects like these require a lot of time and nurturing so it is not just an afternoon spent together.

Another advantage to doing science projects with your kids is that you guys can learn about stuff together. You can pick projects that interest the two of you but you do not know much about. Or you can pick a project that your child is interested in and they can probably teach you a thing or two about science. Either way it is a great learning experience.

By spending time with your child doing science projects you are sending them a silent message that is telling them that science is fun. The advantage to this is you might encourage an interest that your child was unaware that they had.

Another advantage to doing science projects with your kids is that you are teaching them how to make decisions with the information they are provided. This will help to promote your child’s critical thinking skills which will be relied upon more and more as they grow older. By doing this you are giving them the tools that they need to succeed in life.

There are numerous resources available to help you find the right science project to do with your child, even home improvement projects are science projects. In deciding what kind of project to do for the day you can find a variety of things to do on the internet or at your local toy store. Just remember the key to a great science project is conversation with your child.
